"K112 S22" is a series of portraits taken of Hampshire College students during Spring 2022 using a Hasselblad 500C camera with black and white film. The concept was based on Elaine Mayes' 1972 portrait series titled "Advising Day Portraits", which featured a large handful of students sitting down in Mayes' office for a meeting, one after the other. Anya Krouse and I decided to recreate this by seeking out friends and strangers from around campus and asking them to sit in an empty dorm room (my old room in Dakin, K112) for a picture. Obviously we were limited by the fact that we can only portray a specific portion of the population, but we tried our best to include a nuanced mix of people from different years and friend groups.
50 years after its inception, Elaine's project now functions as a kind of time capsule, allowing us to get a glimpse of what the Hampshire population might have looked like all those years ago. Anya and I hope that our series will be looked at in the same way in the future, as a reference and comparison to other generations of students, past and present. The simple setting in which we took the photos hopefully forces your attention on the unique demeanor -- the individuality -- of each student. Viva la Hampshire!
A big thanks to everyone involved! :) <3
